As alarm continues to grow over the rampant influx of overseas scam calls, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has declared that it is intensifying its fight against these disruptive and harmful calls.
To provide effective protection for American consumers from illegal robocalls originating abroad, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers must take immediate action by blocking those illegitimate robocalls at their gateways. This is an imperative step in safeguarding our country from such malicious behavior. The FTC combating overseas robocalls has named this:
Project Point of No Entry.
What is Project Point of No Entry
Project PoNE, undertaken by the Commission, has a three-fold purpose and the FTC lays it out very clearly. 1. Single Out Point of Entry VoIP Service Providers that are transmitting or relaying illegal calls. 2. Notify them that their behavior may breach the Telemarketing Sales Rule and order they put an end to it; and 3. Monitor such suspicious activities on a continuous basis.
If needed, legal action is taken in order to guarantee adherence with rules and laws. Well the legal action. That’s happening quickly as a result of work from various agencies.
Interagency Collaboration Boosts Fight Against Illegal Overseas Robocalls
The FTC is working collaboratively with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Department of Justice (DOJ), to improve their capacity for identifying and punishing perpetrators of illegal robocalls. By sharing resources, this interagency consortium intends to pinpoint who’s responsible for these calls in order to bring them swiftly to justice.
A CNET article in 2022 exposed that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Jessica Rosenworcel deemed robocalls to be the leading customer complaint. Remarks she made at an open forum drove home her point;
“Robocalls are aggravating….What is worse is when we crack down on these junk calls, the scam artists behind them find new ways to reach us. Increasingly, that means robocalls are coming in from overseas.” The chair stressed that, according to one study, more than two-thirds of these malicious robocalls may now originate from overseas. As such, she declared that it was time to “get tough on international robocalls” and to “cut these calls off before they reach our shores, our homes, and our phones.”
FTC’s Actions and the Crucial Role of Consumer Caution
The FTC has already taken action against illegal robocall facilitators, shutting down several operations and securing millions of dollars in judgments against the scammers. However, the challenge is far from over, as scammers continue to devise new tactics to target consumers.
Robocalls are not only aggravating, but they can also be very harmful. Scammers have one mission and this often to use these calls to defraud consumers by pretending to be from government agencies, financial institutions, or well-known companies. Unknowing individuals can be easily deceived into disclosing their personal information, such as Social Security numbers, banking details, or credit card data.
This can lead to identity fraud and the loss of finances – a tragedy that is only furthered by criminals selling this sensitive material on the Dark Web for profit. As a result of these activities, victims often receive countless phone calls from telemarketers overseas seeking more money.
Harnessing New Technology to Keep Consumers Safe from Robocalls
To further protect consumers, the FTC is also developing new technological tools to identify and block illegal robocalls. These tools will be shared with service providers to help prevent fraudulent calls from reaching consumers in the first place. It’s a major step but scammers are creative and continue to find loopholes.
Safeguarding Your Privacy
To protect yourself from unwanted robocalls, the FTC encourages consumers to use precaution: not answering calls coming in from unrecognized numbers and avoiding giving away personal information. If you have already responded to a call like this, please report it right away!
The more detail you can provide – such as your caller ID number, the suspect’s phone number (if given), and when exactly you were contacted – will greatly support their investigation into tracking down these scammers. In an effort to protect American citizens, the FTC has taken up arms against illegal robocalls by developing new technology. The fight is far from over however, so it’s necessary that consumers stay vigilant and guard themselves and their loved ones against these malicious scams by passing on this information.
